چکیده

The EFAR collaboration has measured the structural parameters (half-luminosity radii, total magnitudes, central velocity dispersions and Mg indexes) of galaxies in 84 clusters of the Hercules-Corona Borealis and Pisces-Cetus regions, with redshifts 6000< cz <15000. Analysing this database by means of a Maximum Likelihood algorithm, the Fundamental Plane relation derived is in agreement with existing determinations, and used to determine the peculiar velocities (PV) of the clusters. We nd that the mean peculiar velocities in the two regions are small and compatible with zero motions. We rule out at the 3 level the large bulk ow motion measured by Lauer and Postman (1994). We suggest that distances derived using cD galaxies might be biased due to stellar population eeects.

The peculiar motions of early - type galaxies in two distant regions – II . The spectroscopic data

We present the spectroscopic data for the galaxies studied in the EFAR project, which is designed to measure the properties and peculiar motions of early-type galaxies in two distant regions. We have obtained 1319 spectra of 714 early-type galaxies over 33 observing runs on 10 different telescopes. We describe the observations and data reductions used to measure redshifts, velocity dispersions ...

Evolution of Large Scale Structure { Garching , August 1998 LARGE - SCALE MASS POWER SPECTRUM FROMPECULIAR

The power spectrum of mass density uctuations is estimated from the Mark III and the SFI catalogs of peculiar velocities by applying a maximum likelihood analysis, using parametric models for the power spectrum and for the errors. Generalized CDM models with and without COBE normalization are used. The applications to the two diierent data sets give consistent results. The general result is a r...

Proceedings : Evolution of Large Scale Structure { Garching , August 1998 THEORETICAL VIEW OF ANISOTROPIES OF COS - MIC MICROWAVE

Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies have been recognized as one of the most important observational quantities to understand the early stage of our universe. In this paper, recent development of theoretical works on CMB anisotropies are summarized and it is shown that temperature uctuations of CMB contain rich information, i.e., cosmological parameters, geometry of the universe, init...

Sample variance of the cosmic velocity field

Since the cosmic peculiar velocity field depends on small wave-number modes strongly, we cannot probe its universal properties unless we observe a sufficiently large region. We calculate the expected deviation (sample variance) of the peculiar velocity dispersion from its universal value in the case observed volume is finite. Using linear theory we show that the sample variance remains as large...

The EFAR project has measured peculiar motions in two distant volumes of the universe using Fundamental Plane (FP) distances for 85 clusters with 6000 km s −1 <cz<15000 km s −1. The scatter in distance about the FP is observed to be 20% per galaxy for EFAR sample, resulting in peculiar velocities with a median precision of 1075 km s −1 for the 50 clusters with 3 or more galaxies. We find that t...
